My Project

My Life Academics skills students require a heavy sensory diet to regulate themselves. I hope to meet their needs in appropriate ways by providing them with the chance to explore their artistic sides with a variety of household items and toys that can be used to create art. At this time, many of our class projects are product art, where everyone's art often comes out the same.

I would like to incorporate more process-focused art projects into our weekly schedule so students have the opportunity for self-directed creative exploration.

The toothbrushes, potato mashers, spray bottles, loofahs, salad spinners and rolling pins will be used with our current supply of watercolors, acrylics, bubble wrap, foil, sponges, washi tape and plastic wrap to create different textures and patterns. The trays will help to provide a designated work space, and the art rack will give their creations a safe place to dry. Because they will likely end up getting their hands in paint and getting wet with spray bottles (yay sensory!), the smocks will help to keep their clothes clean.

Some of their process-focused artwork will then be incorporated into product art projects that tie in with the weekly theme. For example, I plan to have students spin paint on paper plates with the salad spinner then cut the plate to make a heart. Another project will involve students blending their own shades of green, using kitchen tools to create a background then adding forest animals to the scene.
