During our daily reading time, students follow along during group reading or work in pairs to analyze the text. Having a copy for every student ensures that everyone can actively track the dual timelines of Salva and Nya. It has made a major difference in keeping the whole class focused and moving together through the chapters.\r\n\r\nThe book has introduced critical reading skills, like tracking alternating perspectives and understanding historical context. More than anything, the students are genuinely amazed by Salva's perseverance and the solutions he finds to survive. It has sparked meaningful conversations about resilience, global empathy, and the water crisis. The short, impactful chapters give us a clear framework to practice summarizing and identifying central themes without overwhelming the kids.\r\n\r\nI have noticed that several students who usually struggle to stay engaged are excited to read each day about Salva's journey. They are constantly impressed by how a young boy faces such overwhelming challenges. Seeing them connect so deeply with his determination proves how vital it is to have high-quality, relatable literature in our classroom. Although we have only completed one recipe so far this school year, students have already benefited from having enough reusable cooking tools for everyone to participate. We made several variations of pie in a cup—blueberry, strawberry, a mix of both berries, and pumpkin—using the plastic containers, mixing spoons, rolling pins, and metal spoons. Having enough tools means students can work at the same time instead of waiting for materials to be shared, helping our 10–12 minute cooking lessons move more quickly and smoothly.\r\n\r\nThe tools also give students meaningful opportunities to practice communication while they cook. Students use AAC devices, picture cards, gestures, and words to make choices, request materials, and communicate what they want or need during each step of the recipe. They also comment on what they like or don't like about the ingredients.\r\n\r\nAt the same time, students are building independence and daily living skills by mixing, rolling, scooping, and preparing food. Because the tools are reusable, we are also saving money by reducing the need for disposable materials. Students regularly volunteer to help clean, and many have shared how much they enjoy using the new equipment. One student commented, \"It's fun to clean now!\" while another shared that the new vacuums are \"really nice, smooth, and easy to use.\"\r\n\r\nThe impact has extended beyond our classroom walls. Students are so enthusiastic about helping that they often ask to clean the hallway as well.
