My Project

Every day, I have the privilege of being able to see two dozen smiling students, eager and ready to learn. I teach in an urban school with students from a wide range of backgrounds. Each day, we share favorite books and enjoy stories together, and my students beg to read more. Despite the challenges that exist in our world today, my students work hard and strive to be the best they can be. They are truly incredible!

One of the most amazing books written for young people is Front Desk by Kelly Yang.

In this novel, Mia, an immigrant from China, must acclimate to a new school, friend drama, and finding herself. Issues including poverty, racism, and discrimination are addressed in an approachable and understandable way for elementary readers. This is a story that I can't wait to read to - and with - my fourth graders.

Being able to share a story with my students while they read along helps establish a personal connection with the text and each other as readers. This project will enable me to bring these characters to life for my students during a novel study of the themes, characters, and lessons Mia helps us learn. Thank you for your support!
