From Seeds to Systems: Bringing Science Alive in 5th Grade

Help me give my students composter starter kit, a water cycle model for hands-on science experiences in 5th grade. This would include growing plants using hydroponics, showing energy movement with decomposition, and the cause and effects of weather and erosion.

My Project

This project will provide 5th grade students in a rural Utah classroom with hands-on science experiences aligned to Utah State Science Standards. With limited access to interactive STEM resources, these materials will bring meaningful, inquiry-based learning directly to students.

Hydroponics supplies, soil, seeds, and a compost bin will support life science instruction focused on plant growth, ecosystems, and sustainability.

Students will compare soil-based and hydroponic growing methods, observe plant development, and collect data to understand how water, nutrients, and light affect growth. The compost bin will allow students to explore decomposition and nutrient cycles while practicing environmentally responsible habits.

Weather and erosion materials will help students investigate Earth’s surface processes. Through hands-on models, students will explore how wind and water shape land-forms and will design solutions to reduce erosion, applying real-world problem-solving skills.

A water cycle model will allow students to observe evaporation, condensation, and precipitation in action. This interactive experience will deepen understanding of how water moves through Earth’s systems and connects to weather and climate.

Throughout the project, students will actively engage in scientific practices such as asking questions, conducting investigations, analyzing data, and constructing explanations. These experiences will increase student engagement, build critical thinking skills, and make science learning more accessible.

By integrating these materials into daily instruction, this project will create a more engaging and equitable science experience, helping rural students develop a strong foundation in science and a lasting curiosity about the world around them.
