From Seed To Plant: A Tomato Plant for Every Student!

Help me give my students items (Potting Soil, Plant Supports, Grow Bags, Tomato Seeds, and Seed Starting Pots) to grow and bring home their very own tomato plant!

My Project

My elementary school is a very special place for all students and teachers! It is a wonderful place for students to grow, learn, and create everlasting friendships. The teachers here go above and beyond to make this a very inviting place for students. Despite any problems they may face, the students are amazing and always have a positive attitude at school! I teach at a Title I school where most of our students receive free or reduced-price lunches. This does not stop our students from working hard to achieve growth and knowledge.

There is nothing better than seeing a lesson come to life through the eyes of your students!

If funded, this will be the 3rd year that I have had the privilege to grow tomato plants with my third graders. They absolutely LOVE this lesson! This unit and opportunity is something that students in the lower grades look forward to as they near 3rd grade! The interest and excitement students have paired with the knowledge that they gain, easily make this my favorite lesson I get to teach!

The items requested in this project will enable each of my 59 students to grow their very own tomato plant that they will be able to take home in May. They will choose which seed will be planted in a cup and transplant it to the small pot when they have reached the appropriate size. Then, they will transplant those to the grow bags with potting soil and add the cage. Through this hands-on process, students are able to learn the parts of a plant, the essentials for successful growth, as well as proper care-taking of a tomato plant. They will also get to see their hard work come to life as their plant begins to sprout, grow, and produce tomatoes!
