Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This project will provide my AP Biology students—who attend a Title I school and are enrolled in an early college program—with access to authentic laboratory experiences that match the rigor of their academic pathway. These students are typically sophomores who excelled in their freshman biology course and actively chose a more challenging, accelerated science track that allows them to graduate high school with an associate degree. Despite their advanced coursework in AP Biology, chemistry, and college-level classes, they currently lack access to essential laboratory equipment.

By funding a gel electrophoresis system, this project will give students the opportunity to develop critical technical lab skills that are foundational for college and STEM careers, including pipetting, sample preparation, data collection, and analysis.

Students will move beyond theoretical learning and engage in hands-on scientific investigation, practicing how scientists analyze DNA and apply evidence-based reasoning to interpret results.

This experience is especially impactful because many of my students have the academic ability and motivation to pursue careers in science or medicine, but limited exposure to professional laboratory tools due to resource constraints. Providing access to this equipment helps close that gap, ensuring that students in a high-need school can participate in the same high-level, inquiry-based science experiences as their peers in more well-resourced settings.
