My students need indoor sports equipment and outdoor playground equipment.

My Students

Everyone thinks of Arizona as a desert, but we are lucky and fortunate to live in the cool mountains. We are near the White Mountain Apache Indian Reservation. Our little town has the population of about 3000 people. There are about 400 students at our school with a variety of cultures and many of our families suffer from low income. Our community has suffered some hardships over the past couple of years. Our town was evacuated because of a wildfire. A plane crashed into our high school, causing lots of damage. We had to close our elementary school and combine it with another school. This increased class sizes. Several teaching positions were not filled due to the budget cuts. We also have had several suicides that were devastating to our small community. Due to the budget cuts, playground sports equipment is not considered a necessity, so it is not purchased.

I would love for all of these kids to have the opportunity to use sports equipment at lunch recess and for after school sport programs.

My Project

Do you remember how much fun recess time was? I couldn't wait to go outside and play with my friends. We loved football, basketball and volleyball. More sports equipment gives more students the opportunity to have more physical activity. My students need footballs, basketballs, tether balls and volleyballs. Currently my students eat lunch as fast as they can so they can be first in line to check out the few pieces of equipment that I have. It was purchased from yard sales and thrift stores. It would be awesome to look out into the playground and see that every kid is getting some type of physical activity as well as learning to work with others and showing tolerance for those that are different.

Having enough playground equipment for all grade levels to utilize during recess, before and after school, would be great.

I try to inspire my students to give up their technology pieces for an hour or two every day and go outside for some sunshine and physical activity.
