Fridges for Little Fingers and Food

My Students

Help! Our dramatic play area is at least 30 years old. Our kitchen doesn't even have a fridge/freezer! The kids are always trying to figure out a way to build a fridge or to find things at home that they can use to build a fridge to store our pretend cold food.

I have a group of 45 highly-active five- and six-year-old students.

My students attend public school and live in a moderately poor area. Many students come from homes where both parents work, and they have limited time and resources to help reinforce learning at home. Because of financial struggles, many students are not given experiences or exposure to a variety of situations. My students can benefit because this will expand their imagination and help them to experience real-world situations/life.

My Project

New furniture for our students in the dramatic play area will engage and expand children's imaginations. Students will be able to explore the world around them. Students will be able to construct their own learning through play. Students will learn how to play/work together, take turns, act out different roles, and express feelings and emotions. Students will learn and utilize important social skills, rules, and cues. Dramatic play helps students to connect their learning with situations and things that they already know. It enhances and extends student learning. Students will be able to construct and explore the reality/world around them. Activities in the dramatic play are integrated into what else we are learning that week. During Ss week, the house becomes a store. During Mm week, the dramatic play becomes a McDonald's. We also turn it into a bakery, restaurant, house, hospital/dr. office, and veterinarian clinic.

At this young age, it is CRITICAL for students to learn through play and exploration.

New kitchen furniture will give students hands-on opportunities to act out scenarios and learn about the world/reality around them. Currently, it seems that children don't have/utilize their imagination anymore. I am sure a lot of this is due the fast-paced, technological world that they live in. Dramatic play is a place where kids can use and build their imagination.
