Frida Kahlo and identity

My students need multicultural skintone markers and pencils and sharpeners.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"My brain hurts. You make me think too much!", exclaimed one student and I thanked him for the compliment.

Many of my students come from extreme poverty and some have never even used crayons before coming to school.

Quite often art class is the only opportunity many students have for positive creative expression. We live in a global society which is reflected in my students and the art work we create.

My Project

"Why is her head on a deer!". "Are you sure she is a girl because she looks like a man with her unibrow and mustache!". My students are fascinated by the self-portraits of Frida Kahlo as we analyze and discuss the symbolism of her art works. She liken her self-portraits to being visual journals of her life. Just like authors use words to express themselves, artists use visual images that often make use of symbols. We also briefly discuss the art work of her equally famous artist husband, Diego Rivera and how his art work reflected his cultural identity and pride. The students create self-portraits that incorporates at least three symbols that expresses something important about themselves. I sometimes think I learn more about my students thru this project than they learn. To create these self-portraits I am requesting multicultural skin tone pencils and markers. I am also requesting hand held sharpeners for the pencils.

After this project, all the students in the school will be able to use them for drawing people.

One student summed it up best when he exclaimed loudly,"Finally, I can draw myself and my friends as we really look like. People do not come in the three choices we had before of pure white, jet black or basic brown." These supplies help children understand that people come in all different colors, helps promote self esteem, tolerance and better understanding of different culture
