Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students, like the vast majority of teenagers (and adults!) these days, are constantly plugged into their phones and computers. Each year the first few weeks of school prove to be more challenging than before because they lack the skills to communicate and connect in person. They would much rather "Snapchat" a thought or reaction than have to actually discuss it with a group of their peers.
Every opportunity possible, students are "posting" in one app or another.
They don't even realize they are missing out on the opportunity to really connect because they are so focused on documenting every fleeting moment digitally. Simple courtesies like responding to a "good morning" and moving over on the sidewalk for a stroller or elderly person are lost to mindless scrolling on a screen for superficial social updates.
As a teacher, it is my responsibility not only to teach academic content, but also model social and emotional skills that will allow them to be productive members of society... and even more importantly compassionate humans.
My Project
By providing my students engaging, non-threatening opportunities through board games to discuss pressing social and emotional topics, I will be able to help them learn how to communicate their thoughts and feelings more effectively with both their peers and the adults in their lives.
Our advisory period is the perfect environment for students to engage in different social games and activities such as Free Me, Say Anything and Teen Talk in a Jar, that challenge them to think critically and respond to real world questions, hear other perspectives and learn from each other's experiences.
Help me take my students beyond the "tweet" or "status update." Allow me to teach them that life is worth experiencing in unlimited, live discussion rather than a few snappy, 140-character digital comments.
