My Students

I teach a high school reading intervention class. Although we have a scripted curriculum for this class, I feel it is incredibly important to introduce the students to some of the novels that the mainstream English classes are reading.

The students really enjoy reading novels as a class.

They are a mixed group of students grades 9-12th. The students in the class range in reading levels from 2nd grade up to 7th grade. As a class we read novels to build vocabulary, reading fluency and comprehension.

They love to feel like they are reading what their same age peers are who are out in mainstream classes. All of the students in this class have a mild to moderate learning challenge as well.

My Project

With the class sets of "Of Mice and Men" and "The Little Prince," my students will be able share in the joy of reading. My students are in a reading intervention class and all have a learning challenge. They will read the same books as their same aged peers.

We will work on reading fluency, reading comprehension and essay writing with these books.

Students will participate in whole class and small group lessons. Learning important literary devices, improving their reading fluency, improving reading comprehension, with the final goal of fostering their love of reading.
