My Students

My students are eager, energetic, and enthusiastic students from Philadelphia who are diagnosed with emotional disturbances and behavioral needs. They all have their own learning abilities and needs, making it imperative to provide a variety of learning activities so all students can access material in a way that utilizes their talents to support their challenges. Since many students lack academic engagement outside of the classroom, it is important to provide them with as much engagement (both social and academic) as possible during the school day.

My Project

"Mrs. S, for my break can I come read a book in your room?" While these may seem like simple words, they made my day. Coming from a student who has little interest in school and is three grade levels below in reading, this was a huge surprise. Here was a student who was giving up his computer time to come read a book with me. Here was a student who had discovered a new interest and a new world in reading. A few days later, this same student volunteered to read aloud in class for the first time.

As reading support teacher in a school for students with emotional needs, it is my desire to instill a love of reading in all students, even those who struggle most.

Every student that has slightly different needs when it comes to reading, and the lessons and activities I plan are individualized to the needs and interests of each student. By using their interests and strengths, I create activities that allow each student to succeed and recognize their own individual growth.

These materials will allow students to continue to develop their reading skills in fun, engaging ways. Whether they need practice with fluency, comprehension, or sight words, these games will add a new options for students. With new options comes a renewed energy for learning as well as new ways to access the material. In our small groups, students work either individually or in groups of 2-3 to complete activities and play games. For fluency practice, these activities will allow students to practice on their reading level with various passages. For reading comprehension practice students will have access to a variety of new activities and skills. Finally, for sight word practice, students will practice their sight words with a new game!
