My Students

I teach in a low income/high poverty school district. Most of our students receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch. A majority of the students and can come from single parent homes or are being raised by extended family. Unfortunately, the students face many challenges both inside and outside of the classroom. We have a high percentage of transient students who have attended 2 or 3 different schools by the time they are in third grade.

Because of these reasons our students depend on us not only for the supplies needed to learn, but also for the stability in their lives that they sometimes may desperately need.

Like many other districts, our district is in a financial crisis. Money for basic classroom supplies has been dramatically cut. Like many other teachers in many other schools, we are expected to do more with less. I want to continue to make my classroom a welcoming place and keep my lessons engaging. I would like to have those basic supplies that I need to be the best teacher I can be for my students. They deserve it!

My Project

In the early morning hours of May 13, 2013 a tragic fire rocked our town and our school community! We lost a student, Joy, along with her 3 siblings, her aunt, and her father. She left school on Friday never to return. We woke to the local news stations reporting the fire and quickly found out that we lost our Joy. Our staff and community was devastated by the loss of so many children. It was determined that there were no working smoke detectors in the home and if there had been the family would have had a chance to survive.

It was at that moment that I decided that I would do something to ensure that we would never lose one of our kids because they didn't have a working smoke detector!

Since this tragedy I have started a program at our school to make sure each child has at least one working smoke detector in their home. The first year I surveyed every one of our 900+ students. Since then I survey all incoming kindergarten students and all new students. I've given out over 200 smoke detectors since losing Joy. With the help of our local fire department this program has led to an annual community wide safety night out.

The initial supply was donated by Kidde, Inc. When that supply began to diminish we had a district wide dress down to replenish. Last year I was fortunate to have detectors donated by donors choose. After last year's survey we are left with one single detector. I want to continue the program but I am in need of detectors to do so. The local Red Cross and fire department are going to install all smoke detectors in the homes.
