Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a low-income school district in which many of my students come from various family home structures. Some of my students come from single-parent households, grandparents who are their legal guardians, or may have two households in which their parents share custody and there is frequent movement. Over half of my students are English language learners. My students can come to school knowing they can count on eating a healthy breakfast and lunch, as we are a Title One school, and meals are provided. Healthy nutrition is one key factor to support academic success.
Although my students are faced with many challenges in their daily lives, they come to school knowing their classroom is a safe, challenging, and engaging learning environment to be in.
I focus on supporting and guiding my students and making the learning experience fun and memorable.
My Project
Many of my students look forward to what's for lunch on the school's menu, as well as what PE game we will play each day. Keeping students physically active is important in developing healthy living routines, and to prevent increased risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, and obesity.
Students who are physically active tend to have improved cognitive performance (concentration and memory).
Their behavior in the classroom improves, allowing for students to be able to focus better, being on-task, and having improved grades. One of my goals to get students more physically and actively involved in physical education is to have the sufficient PE equipment needed to play fun games and get students moving.
Some of the games I look forward to introducing my students to include "Immunity Kickball" in which everyone gets a turn every time. "Double Kickball," is twice as fun as kickball-the team that is up forms two lines, two balls are kicked, and 2-3 players on the same bases at the same time. In"Triple Crown Baseball," the batter takes a nerf football, nerf baseball, and a kickball out of a box and kicks them all out in into the field, runs the bases, while the defense returns all three balls back to the box. In "Obstacle Relay," students will use jump ropes, hula hoops, and small basketballs that will support coordination skills. "Slider" is a less violent dodgeball game with beanbags and practice with Frisbee flicks, underhand throwing and cardio activity. "Frisbee Softball" is also a variation of kickball.
