Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
BINCA welcomes recent immigrants and English Language Learners new to Boston. In the halls of BINCA you'll hear Haitian Creole, Spanish, Vietnamese, Somali, Chinese and Portuguese, and more . . .
Our students are success stories.
Although faced with a myriad of challenges in their lives, such as trauma, homelessness, having to work to pay rent, adjusting to a new language and culture, and other responsibilities that are emotionally demanding, they find a way to persist. BINCA has sent many students to a wide range of colleges and other exciting post-secondary opportunities like Americorps. We are proud of the sense of community we've created within the walls of our school, and the academic and social lessons our students take with them when they graduate.
My Project
At BINCA we serve students who often arrive to school with empty stomachs. Help our students stay engaged in classes without the distraction of a grumbling stomach. We hope to provide a variety of choices such that our students can meet their needs and get back to class.
Out students come from all over the world, willing and ready to learn.
They face obstacles most Bostonians can only imagine- but persevere with the love and commitment of BINCA staff. Having a space in the school where they can always access food is a first step towards asking for help. A snack gets them in the door of my office, where they often return to access the support they and their family need.
