My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school considered Title 1, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.

My 5th grade class consists of 37 dedicated and hardworking students.

Compared to the rest of the county, our school has twice the average percentage of students with special needs, twice the average percentage of students who are homeless, and have the highest poverty rate in the county with 88% of our students on free/reduced lunch. Despite the many challenges our students face they strive to work to the best of their abilities and never stop trying. I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.

My Project

The students at EME are a beautifully unique demographic. Having the highest ESE, Homeless, and Title I populations means we also have the strongest needs. Many of our students only eat food that is provided at school, either in the lunchroom, or in the form of care packages that the school sends home for the family. Because of this, it is imperative that I have snacks in the classroom for when students are hungry.

No child should ever have to go hungry and here at EME we do our best to ensure that never happens.
