Focusing on Math

My Project

I have been a kindergarten and first-grade teacher for four years. I love working with young children because they are so excited to learn and full of bright ideas. As an educator, I believe it is important to reflect upon the ways we can improve our classrooms and our practice. Therefore, I have taken time to think about how my students can be more successful.

I am asking for donations for two items for my classroom.

The first item is noise-canceling headphones. I teach in a school where we have open classrooms. This is a wonderful setup that promotes community among classes. However, it can get loud at times, making it difficult for many students to focus. If every student had a pair of noise-canceling headphones, they would be able to block out distractions more easily. These headphones will help students focus during independent work such as writing, reading to self, and testing times.

My students are hands-on learners. The second item I hope to purchase for my students will be number-line whiteboards. Number lines are a great way for students to learn how to add and subtract between 10 and 20, which is an important standard in first grade. If we had whiteboards with number lines already on them, then we could continue to practice daily without having to waste paper. I am excited to see the changes within my classroom and students' learning once we are able to purchase these items for our class.
