The Special Education Classroom at our school is a shared classroom between two teachers. It is a classroom full of color, laughter, and learning. Our class sizes range from three students to nine students per learning period daily. The needs of each child varying from having learning disabilities to ADHD to Autism.
The kids in our classroom are a lively bunch, along with their energy the our learning groups always bring a willingness to learn!
On an average day in the classroom, you will see students working together to solve a math problem, working on sight words with a teacher, enjoying a book in the classroom library, or finishing a lesson on iReady. It is a classroom that is full of life and learning.
Each child in the classroom has their own personal goals they work on daily. They are beginning to create ways of learning that work best for them in order to be successful in the school setting!
My Project
The use of flexible seating will help students of differing needs focus on learning. While chairs are still useful in a classroom setting. In our classroom, students will be able to use the flexible seating during both small group lessons and independent work. It will offer them the opportunity to address sensory needs while learning.
Flexible seating allows for students who are a little more wiggly than others to move and learn at the same time (bonus: they are even moving oxygen to the brain which allows for more learning!)
Some of the other benefits of flexible seating are the building of appropriate classroom behaviors, encouraging positive peer interactions, and allows for students to be comfortable in an environment where they spend a great deal of their time.
