Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic learners who thrive on learning and exploring the world around them. They are fascinated with why and how things work. They engage in the learning process through books, discussions, and interactive hands-on activities. They have a huge interest for STEAM, especially in being engineers and designers of their own creations. My district, school, and thus classroom, is very diverse. More than 80% of the students speak a language other than English at home, and many have just entered the US less than 2 years ago. Due to budget cuts, the "arts" programs are limited and class sizes are increased. My students also lack cultural, social, and experiential experiences both at home and in school. These factors put them at a huge disadvantage when compared to students in more affluent communities just a few miles away. It is up to us to give these kids what they need in any way possible.

My Project

Voice recorders and timers will help my students monitor themselves as they read so they can become fluent readers.

A reader is fluent when they can read with accuracy, speed, and understanding.

Helping students become fluent readers will help to increase their levels of comprehension. By helping my students become fluent readers, they will be able to move on to higher reading levels and therefore strengthen their comprehension skills. My students love going to the fluency center in my classroom and these recorders and timers will not only motivate them when completing the center but help hold them accountable.
