Help me give my students practice their burgeoning Spanish skills by seeing basic Spanish in print. The students will use the Scholastic magazines in lots of different ways.

My Students

This is my sixth year as an elementary Spanish teacher. I teach every child in my building, Pre-K through fifth grade. We are a Title I school with a very diverse demographic. It's a unique school with very supportive, but often economically challenged, families. Just recently, due to lower enrollment, I have finally gotten a classroom. Our current population is 589 students, with many of those children speaking a foreign language, not necessarily Spanish.

I love teaching at my school because it is so culturally diverse.

I also enjoy getting to know every single student in the school and watching them grow and mature year after year.

My Project

Students love reading periodicals, especially when they see kids like themselves represented among the pages. Magazines engage students unlike other forms of media.

By implementing these magazines in all my Spanish classes, the students will be able to learn Spanish while reading about relevant current events.

The images and information presented are geared specifically to emergent Spanish learners. The vocabulary terms and basic phrases are key to helping new language learners. Consumable materials will allow my students to take these magazines with them when they leave class and continue practicing their language acquisition.

In addition, no classroom is complete without adequate supplies. This project would enable my students, over 600 of them, to have enough supplies to do their work.
