Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are truly the best. They come to my classroom from such diverse backgrounds and cultures and even though I come here to teach them, they teach me new things all the time! They simply amaze me every single day. Our neighborhood is one of very high poverty and many of my students know the effects that can have all too well.
That doesn't stop our kids.
No matter what's going on in their lives outside of school, many of our kids enjoy coming to school everyday. Our school provides a safe place where they feel cared for and respected and a place where they can thrive and not just survive. We provide a place for them to call home up to six days per week thanks to extracurricular programs we provide after school and on Saturdays.
Our school has invested into our music program over the years and it allows us to provide a high-quality student instrument to every child, free of charge. This gives all students at our school an equal opportunity to take part in a still-developing music program in our district.
My Project
A class set of tablets will allow my music students to participate in online quizzes during class. They can take music theory lessons, keep digital copies of music, provide method books as e-books, complete listening exercises, fill out digital practice records, record their playing tests, provide tuners and metronomes. This will make digital learning more accessible for all students who may not have access to technology outside of school.
My classes are some of the largest in the school and there aren't enough school devices to cover the biggest ensembles at once.
On top of that, the devices are almost always checked out to core classes (English, Math, Science, History). Purchasing our own set of tablets will allow my students to have access to technology every day of the week.
Having a class set of tablets will also allow my students to record their playing tests and submit them to me online. Currently, our playing tests take two to three days of class time because students have to play their test in front of their peers. In classes of more than forty, this can take a very long time. As a result, we take few playing tests throughout the school year. Recording and turning them in online, will allow me to listen to their playing more than once and provide feedback privately rather than in front of their peers.
