My Students

I teach in a culturally diverse 8-12 grade high school in a rural location. Over 70% of our students receive free and reduced price lunches. We try to do the best with what we have but our funding is limited and there is no money allotted for any extras.

In an effort to meet the demands of the workforce and prepare students for jobs of the future, the classroom has evolved to a more collaborative environment where students work together in groups to solve rigorous mathematical problems.

Students want to work at stations that are more like what they would choose outside of school, such as at home, or possibly the local coffee shop.

A traditional classroom can be intimidating. Students walk in to a rigid environment with only one choice of seating, a chair and a desk. Not all students can learn in the same environment. It is important to provide choices for students to be able to concentrate. A flexible seating classroom is the answer to this problem. When students walk in my classroom, they are able to choose they type of seating where they will learn best.

My Project

I am working on creating a more relaxed environment in my classroom so students feel more comfortable learning math. I have started incorporating flexible seating throughout the room, offering a variety of choices, such as bean bags and couches, as well as traditional student desks.

Students need a more inviting environment to maximize learning.

They like to choose where they will learn best each day. By adding a tall table and chairs to my classroom, they can choose to either sit at a traditional student desk, or they can sit at a taller table that would be more like where they do homework at home.
