Help me give my students flexible seating options- wobble chairs, cushions for all sensory needs, a couple of things to help with fine motor skills, and a sphere that can be used for both science and teaching self-regulation.
Most students walk into my VPK classroom as their first school experience. This year sets the tone and attitude students have about themselves and their ability to learn and grow throughout life.
Although every year brings different students, I can tell you about children who I have had the privilege to teach their first year of school.
These children have so much on their plate, Being with a new teacher, new classmates, new expectations, rules, and routines. The beauty in all of the new and difficult transitions for these babies is without even realizing it, they are so incredibly brave. Walking into the unknown, learning to get along with people like and unlike themselves, and adapting to a new environment. My students are moldable, impressional, and everything is delightfully magical to them. Incredibly active, curious about everything, hilarious, blunt, authentic to who they are, and able to truly treasure big and small moments in life.
Flexible seating is essential to the early childhood classroom. Unfortunately, many Title 1 schools simply don't have the funding to accommodate this need.
Research on flexible seating has uncovered a plethora of positive benefits.
Empowering students to have a degree of control and choice over their learning environment, making it FUN and COMFORTABLE which keeps students more engaged and on task. Students develop higher order of thinking by figuring out what is the most beneficial position for them to complete a task. Most importantly, all students need sensory input and more physical activity, especially those with differing learning abilities such as ADD, ADHD, and ASD.
On a larger scale, many Title 1 school children are at risk for not finishing high school. Let's give them the best start believing wholeheartedly that it will give them tools to finish not only well, but most importantly, their own personal best.
My heart is to give my students the best foundation. A foundation that will gift them a love for learning, confidence in themselves as well as their ability to decide and learn, and develop higher order of thinking.
