My Students

I am a Special Education Teacher in a the Resource Room. My students range from Kindergarten thru 3rd grade, with self-contained 6th graders. I teach in a public school setting in a rural area. It is a lower income area. But it has a large amount of parental volunteer support.

In my classroom we learn from every opportunity possible and I use every resource that I can get my hands on to help them be more successful.

My students come from a very diverse range of families, some are adopted, homeless, low income, and foster families. My students have different disabilities that qualify them for support in the Special Education Classroom. I have students who have Specific Learning Disabilities in one or more academic area, I have students with Traumatic Brain Injuries, students with Autism (ranging from high functioning to very low functioning), some with behavior problems, social disorders, students with Other Health Impairments, some students that are Intellectually Disabled, and some that are Emotionally Disturbed. No matter what the title of their disability is they have the desire to learn and the ability to show progress, they just need different strategies to be able to do it.

My Project

Flexible seating helps students stay engaged and on task. During direct instruction and independent work time my students are able to choose which type of seat works best for them. Because so many of my students have attention issues and struggle to sit still the flexible seating allows them to move while staying in their assigned area.

My students are remarkably more engaged and on task during class time when they are allowed to move in their seat and are not focusing on sitting still.

After being out of school during the COVID-19 school closure it has been even more difficult to keep students in their work area in the structured learning environment.

The majority of the products that I have selected will help my students with the flexibility they need to be engaged in the lesson being taught and stay on task during independent work time. The rest of the products that I have chosen are learning materials to help close the learning gap that has increased due to school closure.
