If you were to walk through the door of my classroom you would see students busy working on different levels of math skills. They would be using concrete materials (math manipulatives: Unifix ten frames, rekenreks, dice and number lines for basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). They would be using representational methods (drawing pictures). They would also be using abstract methods (using only numbers and mathematical symbols). The purpose of teaching through a concrete-to-representational-to-abstract sequence of instruction is to ensure students truly have a thorough understanding of the math concepts/skills they are learning. In my classroom we learn from every opportunity possible and I use every resource that I can get my hands on to help them be more successful. My students struggle with different social skills and need to learn how to manage the behaviors that they have developed. My students have skill deficits that could later translate into occupational challenges. Through the use of picture books children are able to relate to social situations and develop a solution without accusing or criticizing classmates. With the help of some social skills teacher resource books I will be able to better prepare my students for other social situations outside of the school setting.
