My students need comfortable flexible seating options to enhance their learning experiences. This includes a soft rug, bean bag chairs, lap desk and a floor seat.
"Studies consistently show that classroom design matters to how children engage, participate and ultimately stay involved in their learning experience" (Fernandes, Huang & Rinaldo, 2011; Gremmen, Van den Berg, Segers & Cillessen, 2016 and Marx, Fuhrer & Hartig, 1999).
Classroom environments shape learning; I truly believe that.
I'm sure everyone can agree, that YOU even enjoy being comfortable while reading a book, or completing work. We learn best when we choose our environment... simple as that!
My school's diverse group of students in Buffalo, NY are some of the most hardest working, and dedicated kids that I know. Because I am a special education teacher in an inclusion classroom, I know it is ESPECIALLY important that "my kids" feel comfortable in their learning environment to thrive both socially, emotionally and academically. My "small-group time" (resource room) during the day can be an opportunity for my kids to choose how they'd like to learn. Donations to this project will help improve my classroom by allowing students the opportunity to learn in positions that best suit them.
My Project
Research shows that allowing students to sit in comfortable, flexible seating options greatly enhances their focus. With the flexible options for seating, students will be able to choose how and where they want to learn. As we know, everyone learns differently, and my special education students would significantly benefit from completing their work and reading in their own special spot.
Some people benefit from standing, some by sitting, and others by laying down.
Changing that throughout the day can significantly improve the motivation and focus of the student. As you can understand personally, sitting in one spot all day can pose a challenge at times (especially for people/students who are born to move). By doing this, students are encouraged to take their learning into their own hands and make smart personal learning decisions. This project is an attempt to eliminate the challenges of sitting in hope for more successful, purposeful and focused learning.
In the list below, I am asking for donations towards:
- A rug for students to sit on.
- 2 bean bag chairs for students to recline and relax into.
- 2 Lap desks for students to complete work at while sitting on the rug.
- Padded floor seat to provide another option of sitting for my students.
