Flexible Seating for Special Education Math/English Classroom!

Help me give my students flexible seating and the much needed classroom supplies! I have included wobble seats, floor cushions, and weighted yoga balls to help my special needs students focus and enjoy learning!

My Students

I teach special education resource and inclusion classes at a jr. high. I teach both math and English. My students are wonderful, but they often feel negatively toward school in general, and math in particular. They feel like they are not good enough, like school is too hard, and like teachers have given up on them. The students are especially down and uninterested in school due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I enjoy helping them learn, helping them to see their own strengths, and helping them to feel successful. My classes are small and are made up of children with autism, children with specific learning disabilities, children with ADHD, children who are English Language Learners, and children with behavioral difficulties.

My students thrive on being able to express themselves and share their ideas in a safe and welcoming learning environment.

They take pride in doing hard things and seeing their own progress. I think they enjoy being in class and that the environment of the class helps to change their attitude toward learning and school in general.

My Project

These supplies will help my students get excited about learning and coming to class. I have learned through my experiences in teaching that my students are more likely to make an effort in learning when they feel comfortable in class. I have also noticed that these last few years with COVID-19 that students are disinterested in school and in making efforts to learn.

Flexible seating makes class more fun!

My students already struggle in school. Making math/English class a little more enjoyable goes a long way with them. Flexible seating allows my students the freedom to choose where they want to work. I like being able to give them choices and options that help them feel more in charge of their learning. They feel comfortable in class, and they are happy to be here. Flexible seating encourages my students to make connections with their peers.

The cushions offer places for my students to work on math or to read their books. I am kind of amazed at how much my students enjoy using the few options I currently have in my classroom. The yoga balls, wobble cushions, and bouncy bands will help my students with autism and ADHD who need movement and fidget opportunities to help them focus.

The earbuds with microphones are for my English students to use with text-to-speech software when writing essays. I chose these particular headphones because they are unobtrusive and won't draw attention to the student using them. They are also easy to wipe off and keep disinfected. The calculators are to replace materials that have been lost or damaged. We use calculators in class every day. The game buzzers will help gamify learning and turn boring worksheets into more exciting competitions!
