This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend a Title I, low-income school, but don't let that fool you! What they lack socioeconomically, they more than make up for it with dedication and hard work! These kids are going places if only given the right tools. My students are struggling readers who display grade level deficits. Yet, reading is the foundation on which all other skills build. In order for these children to be successful, we must utilize an array of resources to promote learning.
My Project
Our school serves many low income students, and our enrollment has bloomed to the point that we are bursting at the seams! I have a tiny classroom that I teach reading in. In this program, we split into small groups of learners, which requires students to read quietly for a portion of our class. Our independent readers have trouble focusing in our small classroom because there isn't always a quiet place to read that is away from distractions. With flexible seating, students in the small reading group could take a little beanbag seat and read comfortably away from the hustle and bustle of the other learning groups. This would greatly benefit the children that struggle with focus and attention.
