Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are incredibly driven, compassionate, empathetic, inquisitive, and kind! I am the Special Education teacher in an Integrated Co-Taught class, so about half of our students fall under the "general education" classification, and the other half fall under a variety of special education classifications, ranging from Specific Learning Disabilities to Autism Spectrum Disorder.

In our class, we believe our strengths lie in our differences.

Our students are constantly lifting each other up, offering support and encouragement during challenges, and showing pride in each other throughout their successes.

Our school is nestled right along the Hudson River, just north of New York City. Our district provides all of our students with free breakfast daily, and the majority of our students receive free/reduced lunch as well. In partnership with our town's food pantry, we also provide many students with nonperishable groceries to take home to their families. As a teacher, I consider it my responsibility to provide my students with not just the bare minimum necessary to be successful, but the resources that will allow them to have an engaging and memorable 5th grade experience. This Donors Choose project will help me achieve just that!

My Project

This year, my co-teacher and I decided to do something radical; we asked our 10 year old students to design their ideal classroom. After completing a survey which required them to think metacognitively about their learning styles, they each drew up classroom blueprints which overwhelmingly included flexible seating options to make their workspace more cozy and inviting.

I know what you're thinking - allow 5th graders to design their classroom?

YES! We value student inputs because we recognize that providing students with autonomy and ownership over their learning environment will motivate them to put their best effort towards their learning.

As an integrated class, we have many students with a variety of sensory needs. These flexible seating options, from standing desks to floor seats with bouncy backs to beanbags, will provide our students with the sensory input they need to be successful in the classroom. These seating options were selected with purpose, down to the colors. Space design research shows the positive impact colors can have on children, so we selected seating options with calming colors found in nature to promote a positive and safe space for our students.

We can’t wait to share these flexible seating options with our 5th graders!
