I teach a very active and enthusiastic group of twenty-six 10-11 year-olds. I have 16 boys in my class and 10 girls. In the past three weeks, I have noticed how uncomfortable they are sitting in the hard plastic chairs. With all of their energy, they want to be able to get up and down, sit on the floor, rock in a seat, and bounce up and down. I personally replaced my hard and uncomfortable chair with a padded swivel chair.
They are a group of very hard workers, but as 10-11 year olds, I can understand how hard it is to sit in traditional chairs all day.
I want to help my students be the most successful learners. In order to do this, they need a less traditional classroom setting. I hope to have a fun, engaging, and exciting year with these students, and to make all 26 of them love school as much as I did when I was their age.
Over the past three weeks, I have observed my students doing their most successful work while sitting on the floor, standing, and in nontraditional seats.
I have a very active and energetic group of students who, similar to myself, find the hard, plastic chairs uncomfortable and sometimes distracting to their work.
In their previous classes,my students have had many flexible seating options. I have seen the benefits of flexible seating and would like to be able to provide those options in my classroom. Flexible seating makes students more engaged and allows students to choose how they work best to succeed in school.
