8th grade is such an amazing mix of different interests, abilities and goals. My students are on an all girls team and all care for one another genuinely. Learning morality and independence as a whole, they have the potential to go very far.
What gets me up in the morning: amazing students who inspire me to reflect on my own character.
I teach my girls to be leaders, writers, dreamers and independent young women who not only create their own destiny, but inspire others to believe in their dreams.
My Project
I'm a firm believer in keeping the focus on what's really important: the students. If student motivation and higher engagement is truly the desired end game, then we as teachers must adapt right along with our students in our classrooms.
Teachers must be willing to give up the power of the seating chart and truly hand over the responsibility of seating choices to our students.
I believe that the more power I give up in our classroom, the more power I get back. With flexible seating, I would like for my students to feel empowered by the opportunity to have choices. Our whole-group instruction will happen on the big rugs in the middle of our classroom. Using the couch, benches and rugs, they will have at least three types of classroom seating and centers for instruction. Each station will contain stationary items and instructional items including pens and supply holders for each learner. A craft cabinet will be used to store all student items and necessities. A roving whiteboard will demonstrate student-led abilities. Using the motivational artwork and ceiling hangings, the decor of the classroom will create an inviting atmosphere where students will be comfortable in a nurturing and safe environment.
Flexible classrooms give students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them, and help them to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical thinking. I hope to help my students become more self-aware of what types of seating and environment help them learn best.
