I teach 6-12 grades students with IEPs (Individualized Education Plans) due to having a disability. Many of my students work through the challenges of having a learning disability, health impairment or emotional disability to be successful and contributing community members in our classroom and school. I am continually amazed by their abilities, kindness and hard work to compensate for areas that don't always come easy.
In Special education, you often have to teach students outside the box in unique and innovative ways.
Through this process, I have learned so much from my students about learning styles, techniques and a being fearless. They have taught me all of these things and so much more about the power of tenacity and the human spirit. Many of my students are artists, dancers, and musicians. Where they may struggle in academic areas they excel in the arts. They deserve to feel important and valued in the classroom.
Education can be an equalizer and I would like to give my students the opportunity to access tools that will help them be successful in their learning.
My Project
All students need to feel good about the classroom space that they spend a good part of their day in. Many times a special education classroom can seem dull and sad. Help make my students happy with the space they will work in.
Having inspiring and flexible seating options in a classroom is a great way to help students settle in and feel supported in their learning environment.
Many students come to school with adverse past experiences, trauma or stress. I want to create a classroom environment that allows them to feel safe and cared for. Having flexible seating options gives them a choice in where to seat and allows them to have positive movement options in the classroom.
