This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are creative, artistic, thoughtful, talkative and full of questions! They absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects that challenges then them to think outside the box to find solutions! They come to school each day ready to learn and collaborate with other students. I teach a combo classroom with 5th and 6th graders who have a range of different learning disabilities. I am a special education teacher who is always looking for ways to make learning fun, exciting, and interactive.

My Project

Flexible seating increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength. In turn, this burns more calories and increases metabolism. It also helps keep young minds more alert and focused. Flexible seating benefits included giving students choice, allowing students to move, comfort, sensory input, increase collaboration and communication, and it’s FUN!I teach in a special education classroom with a variety of learning needs and disabilities.

My students absolutely love the flexible seating we have in the classroom but unfortunately they have to take turns and share the comfort and experience of seating in a fun seat.

Flexible seatings are used during small group centers. Students appear to be more engaged and participate more when they are sitting in a different seat throughout the day. Having enough flexible seating in the classroom will allow all students to learn in a fun way and offer amazing benefit to all students.

I chose this career because it is rewarding, and I am very passionate about helping students with special needs. Over the years I learned many academic strategies to improve students learning. However, I noticed towards the middle of the school year, students become less motivated and engaged. After brainstorming ideas to increase students’ engagement, a lightbulb went off. Students are tired of sitting in hard standard school chairs all year long! When students are home, they tend to work on the floor, bed, couch and even outside. Students need active movement, a change of scenery and flexible seating in the classroom. After research and trying to try flexible seating, I noticed a tremendous change in students’ engagement and learning experience. Students who sat on a bean bag, on the floor or in a different type of chair they were more focused, alert, engaged, and completed their classwork.
