Flexibility is the Seat for Me!!

My students need movable, flexible seating for collaborative planning as well as independent study.

My Students

Middle school students are pretty insecure and looking to find their way. The library is that place of security and comfort where students can study, read, do homework, do research, meet a friend, work on a project, or whatever their school day requires.

Some students come into the library-loving the place and all that it has to offer, both academically and socially.

Others would prefer not to come in, embracing the single-minded thought "I don't like to read".

As students become more aware and more comfortable with the library being more than "that place where books are kept", it is more desirable to have varied seating choices.

I make a concerted effort to listen to what my students like; everything from their favorite food to eat, to their favorite thing to do. One of their favorite things to do is to "hang with their friends". My current library offers seating at tables, computers, comfortable chairs, and couches. To complete their seating and gathering choices, I would like to offer them movable seating for independent work or collaborative planning.

My Project

I am wanting to purchase movable, single-person desks that will allow a section of the library to be quickly reconfigured for one or a group.

The student desks will have easy maneuverability on casters, storage space for personal items, and swivel desktops for left or right handed needs and ease of sharing laptop screens.

Flexible seating encourages comfort, collaboration, and comradeship. The seating can be bean bags, balls, standing or seating desks, the floor, cushions, mats, couches, high tables, low tables and a host of other options.

The movable desk that I desire for the library is comfortable and affords easy access in and out of the seat. The table swivels in tandem with the seat to accommodate users of all sizes.

Because of Hurricane Harvey, students in our community had to endure the hardship of losing their homes and belongings, and many of our students were and still are displaced. This project will help to ensure all of our students are given the opportunity to work in a place of comfort with an increased opportunity to succeed.
