This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students regularly deal with trauma in many forms: poverty, homelessness, hunger, abuse, imprisonment of family members, etc. Their young minds often find it difficult to concentrate on their studies for any length of time.
All of my students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch.
Often, school meals are the only food they eat in a day. Concentration and putting forth the energy needed for learning is difficult, although they are curious. My students crave new experiences and information.
My students like to experiment with different types of technology and media. I love watching them make connections in our ELA center activities.
My Project
Our classroom is set up in a flex-seating style and my kids love it! Every six weeks we rotate into different flex-seating groups so that all of the children can use each of the spaces. However, much of our additional furniture is typical tables and chairs.
Being able to offer my kids comfortable options for independent reading, or working independently in general, would be a game changer.
The flex-space ottoman will get us on our way to offering various individual flex-space options. I would like my kids to have options other than the group across the room's furniture. After all, what if that group doesn't feel like moving? What if they don't want someone else sitting in their assigned space?
Ideally, we would like to add quite the selection of flex-space options, but the ottoman would get us started.
