My students regularly deal with trauma in many forms: poverty, homelessness, hunger, abuse, imprisonment of family members, etc. Their young minds often find it difficult to concentrate on their studies for any length of time.
All of my students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch.
Often, school meals are the only food they eat in a day. Concentration and putting forth the energy needed for learning is difficult, although they are curious. My students crave new experiences and information.
My students like to experiment with different types of technology and media. I love watching them make connections in our ELA center activities.
We recently welcomed one of these ottomans into our classroom thanks to a generous donor. Often, furniture is difficult to imagine in your space when purchasing online. This piece is perfect. The color is bright, the material is so very soft and comfortable, and it is the perfect size for my kids to sit and read independently.
We are thinking that if we had more than one of the ottomans, more kids would be able to choose that comfortable space during independent reading or iPad time.
Not to mention that the kids have discovered that two of them actually fit quite comfortably sitting on the ottoman.
I have discovered that even with two of them using the ottoman, they stay on task working independently. I think it must be the soft material that lures them in.
