Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My job as a Language Arts teacher isn't just to teach my students to read, understand what they read, and write well. I want to do so much more as their teacher. My goal is to instill in each of my little fourth graders a passion for reading and books.
My little ones are the most eager, hard-working, sweetest bunch of students you will ever meet.
Even though their circumstances at home are challenging, they come to school each and every day ready and willing to work hard. They enjoy school which makes my job as their teacher so much more rewarding.
My Project
I imagine all my students gathered at my carpet, with their own book in hand. I plan to read aloud the majority of the book so my kids can just enjoy the story, but I feel each student having their own copy is important. I know how much I love turning pages when I read and how I love seeing how much I've read when I close a book with my bookmark in place. The feeling of accomplishment and sometimes heartache when I've closed the book after just finishing the story is something I want my students to experience. I want them to love reading like I do. The story told through this book is one I'm sure a lot of kids can relate to and I can't wait to share it with them!
The teacher in the story, Mr. Daniels, tells the main character, Ally, who struggles in school that a wise person once said 'Everyone is smart in different ways.
But if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it will spend its whole life thinking that it's stupid.'
This book(Fish in a Tree) will provide opportunities for rich discussions about differences in our class. I hope while reading through this story my students gain confidence in their unique personalities.
