Help me give my students the opportunity to strengthen their vocabulary and build their background knowledge on various Science and Social Studies topics.
My students are in the first grade and attend a public school in Maine. Some of my students come from a high poverty area where the resources they need are not always available. Therefore, it's my job to make learning fun and to ensure they have all they need to succeed in my classroom! My first graders are excited to come to school each and every day! They are enthusiastic learners, passionate about reading fiction as well as nonfiction and listening to various read alouds.
My first graders are very curious about the world around them.
When reading, they want to make their stories come to life in their minds. When told that my first graders will learn more about science and social studies at the beginning of the school year, they are so enthusiastic and excited for this learning. They often do not get to experience these topics and concepts outside of school. Therefore, it's so important to give them these opportunities.
My Project
Utilizing Scholastic News in my classroom on a weekly basis will provide my students the opportunity to learn new things about the world and their environment. These articles will teach my first graders about school rules, science, social studies and more!
I feel that using Scholastic News in my classroom will foster a love of reading as we explore these topics together and my students will gain various skills by reading grade-level text.
These magazines will allow us to come together and first discuss the vocabulary words students will come across. Through these discussions students will learn even more on these topics. As a class, we then use the online version to explore the newspaper, watch the learning videos and play the skill based games. After, students are given the opportunity to explore their very own magazine at their seat spot and learn more. When told they can keep their magazine their faces are priceless!
