My Students
My students come to first grade eager to learn about the world around them. They love to sit down with a friend to read, and they love to talk! Our school is an urban elementary school in St. Paul with many bilingual students who are learning English. Some of our students have recently arrived in the United States and did not have an opportunity to attend school before.
Every day I see first graders working together, playing together, and engaged in learning about math, reading, writing, and science.
They are a community of learners that cares about each other.
My Project
For young children, financial literacy begins with concepts such as the value of coins, buying and selling, needs, and wants, how to count money, understanding greater than/less than, counting by ones, fives, and tens, and beginning addition and subtraction skills.
First graders learn best with hands-on tools.
They manipulate the materials to represent and compare numbers and the relationships between numbers. They especially like working with partners and playing games cooperatively to solve problems, count, and represent numbers.
My students are asking for games, coins and small counters so they can work and play together during math. We will use the counters to create math games so students can work in small groups creating their own addition and subtraction problems such as: "I have 8 apples. I sell 1 apple. How many apples do have have left?" or "Anita had 6 bananas. She bought 2 more bananas. How many bananas does she have now?" Using the small counters shaped like fruit and other objects will make learning math skills feel like a game to my first graders. Students will use the coins to match the numbers of objects and represent the number in coins. The clip boxes will help us organize the counters and games that we create.
Thank you for helping my students have fun and learn important math and financial literacy skills. Your support will help them be successful in first grade and beyond.
