My students receive Speech & Language Therapy. This project will help me better serve my students through providing classroom teachers and parents simple "Fine Motor Boot Camp" activities which address communication, fine motor and academic skills. The students on my caseload are children with disabilities from a low-income school district in rural Ohio.
My students have difficulty with fine motor and communication skills.
I serve students with a wide range of disabilities, including cognitive disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder & specific learning disabilities.
My Project
Materials from this grant will be used to create 25 hands-on activities which will be utilized by teachers, parents & therapists. Items such as alphabet beads, shoelaces, hole punch tools, play coins & various containers will be used by my students to practice fine motor, communication, social and academic skills. The materials being used to create these activities are typically inexpensive and easy to find, making the activities easy for teachers & parents to replicate. In one activity, pom poms are sorted by color into their corresponding containers. Students will use tweezers to pick up pom poms and will open containers (twist-tops). Skills addressed while engaging in this "simple" activity include: visual discrimination, color identification, matching, fine motor control, following directions, prepositions, descriptors, superlatives & more.
The idea of this project is to encourage & empower teachers & parents to work on students' Communication, Fine Motor, Academic & Social skills outside of Therapy Rooms.
These portable activities help promote receptive and expressive language skills including understanding and using: prepositions, sequencing, synonyms, antonyms, questions, directions and vocabulary! Social skills will also be addressed through joint attention, cooperative work and peer teaching. The activities are designed to address fine motor skills including: pencil grip, cutting and visual attention. In addition to reinforcing Communication, Social skills and Fine Motor skills, these activities will be designed to simultaneously teach academic skills such as: pre-literacy, number concepts, matching and patterning. Activities based on Fine Motor Boot Camp by Julie Marzano & Emily McCarthy.
