Your generous contributions to our project, \"Big Feelings, Little Learners: Building Calm & Kindness in Preschool,\" have provided us with essential resources to foster a more emotionally aware, empathetic, and peaceful classroom environment. You have directly impacted the social and emotional development of our young learners.\r\n\r\nHow We Are Using the New Resources\r\nThe materials funded by your generosity—including the ECR4Kids Leaf Floor Rocker Chairs, Rainbow Emotions Fidget Poppers, Emotions Feeling Pocket Chart, and Play-Doh Modeling Dough—are now integral parts of our daily routine.\r\nWe use the Emotions Feeling Pocket Chart every morning during circle time to help students identify their emotions, linking abstract feelings to concrete language. The Leaf Floor Rocker Chairs create a self-initiated \"calm-down corner\" where children can retreat when they feel overwhelmed, practicing self-regulation techniques with the Fidget Poppers or using the Play-Doh for creative expression and stress relief. These tools provide our students with new ways to manage their feelings and become more independent, confident learners.\r\n\r\nA Specific Classroom Moment\r\nA particularly touching moment occurred last week. Two students were in a conflict over a shared toy, a situation that previously might have escalated into tears or frustration. Instead, using the techniques we practiced, one student calmly walked to our new quiet corner and sat in a Leaf Floor Rocker Chair with a Fidget Popper. The other student, seeing this positive coping mechanism modeled, sat nearby. After taking a few minutes to regulate their feelings, they began talking calmly about why they were upset, eventually resolving the issue themselves. It was an extraordinary demonstration of the self-management skills they are developing thanks to these tools.\r\nStudent Reactions\r\nWhen the students first saw the new materials, their excitement was palpable. Their eyes lit up when they realized these comfortable chairs and fun tools were for our classroom permanently. They immediately gravitated towards the items, asking what everything was for. Their initial curiosity quickly turned into understanding when we explained that this was their space to use when their \"big feelings\" got too big. The greatest reaction wasn't just excitement over new things, but the quick adoption of these items as tools to help them feel safe and understood.\r\n\r\nWhat's Next for Our Students\r\nOur students are now moving into the next phase of our project: \"Kindness in Action.\" Having developed skills in identifying and managing their own feelings, the next step is cultivating empathy for others. We are starting a \"Kindness Journal\" where we document acts of kindness we observe daily. The students will be using the new resources to discuss scenarios involving helping friends and practicing how to use kind words and gentle hands. Their next steps will involve planning a simple classroom \"Kindness Campaign\" where they will create drawings and posters to share our classroom's commitment to empathy with other classes in the school.\r\n\r\nYour support has built a foundation of emotional intelligence that these children will carry with them for the rest of their lives. Thank you for investing in the heart of our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1762347712280,"projectUrl":"project/big-feelings-little-learners-building/9784419/","projectTitle":"Big Feelings, Little Learners: Building Calm & Kindness in Preschool","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Lane","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8654247_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1759334463007","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8654247"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_83513","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":307,"numTeachers":23,"percentFrplEligible":75,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":95,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":0,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"13.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":66.3,"schoolId":83513,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about McKinley Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"McKinley Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/ohio/lisbon-exempted-village-school-district/mckinley-elementary-school/83513"}
