Help me give my students the opportunity to create artwork by supplying painting, coloring books, and knitting materials to investigate stress management research and techniques.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is located in Downtown Charleston, however, scholars are bused in from all around Charleston and it's neighboring communities. We are a very diverse school, with 44.2% of our population being African American, 2.4% being Hispanic, 1.9% being Asian, and 1.5 % being multiracial. 39% of our scholars receive free or reduced-price lunches. A lot of my students do not have the means to purchase basic school supplies, let alone an expensive graphing calculator.
We are a publicly funded school that focuses on both math and science curriculum.
Our mission is to educate students for success in their future by providing innovative learning environments. Each year, the students are provided at least one hands-on math or science experience through our STEMester program, which are student led projects. Some examples of STEMester projects include: Battle Bots, Urban Farming, Investigating and communicating Climate Change.
My Project
Students will explore the science of stress management and their developing brains. Students will learn how to decompress and relax from stressful situations.
They will develop their own stress management techniques through exploring yoga, journaling painting, knitting, and mediation.
Students will be creating artwork with the supplies provided to investigate stress reduction techniques.
With health experts, they will explore the body's stress response system - from their prefrontal cortex to their cortisol in their blood stream. Students will talk to current college students and college student life counselors about how to be successful in college while managing their stress. Students will develop individual or group expo projects or stress management seminars upon completion.
