Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As an English teacher, my classroom is very textually rich! However, with the common core movement that is sweeping through our schools, this word "text" is taking on a new meaning. Therefore, my classroom is a visually stimulating one and includes printed text, video, and images for analysis!
I work at a Title I school in the inner city area of Los Angeles.
The neighborhood my school services is crippled by poverty and all the issues that come along with that (including drugs, violence, homelessness etc). My students come to me reading below grade level and with the new demands common core is placing on them, the achievement gap is a very real thing for them. I task myself with the job of providing as much intervention I can each year to ensure my students get as many opportunities as possible to succeed while they are with me. In the technological age, student engagement is something all teachers struggle with, and we must move with the times. It is our job to bring them into the classroom (physically and mentally). Like the neighborhood around us, my school lacks the funding required to make our classrooms flourishing environments, and the onus falls on the teacher to find creative ways to engage students with the little tools we are provided.
My Project
My 6th graders need to be inspired! The common core curriculum is so advanced, and they are so far behind, I need some tools to bridge the gap. With this donation, we will step away from the prescribed textbook and use this rich and imaginative text to perform grade level literary analysis and learn how to analyze images as a form of text. They are bored and frustrated with the textbook and need something exciting like this book, The Peddler's Bed, to inspire them back into the world of storytelling.
As a teacher in the 21st century, one of the greatest battles we fight is the battle with technology.
Our students demand immediacy and are reading less and less. This is a critical issue that schools need to address. This donation will breath creative license back into my classroom and hopefully inject a love of literature (and art) back into my students. As we move into the future, we must not let out students forget the creativity reading breeds.
