As a speech language pathologist, my students are mostly have limited verbal skills or are non-verbal. They have a lot to share but mostly use gestures or behaviors to communicate their wants and needs.
They use pictures to label items and communicate.
For example, if the student would like to use the bathroom they would select the picture and hand it to the teacher.
Having a system to communicate would truly change their lives- they would be able to share what they feel, want and need to say!
Since the students are limited verbally pictures are their access to communication. If I am able to make them books of pictures and they could use those to speak.
I would make multiple pictures representing items and words with velcro on the back.
They would velcro what they want on a velcro strip and hand it to the person they want speak with. For example, they may build the sentence " I need the bathroom" or " I want a snack".
Additionally, they could learn the names/ to label more items in their environment. The hope is that we ultimately make them a system to communicate.
