My Students

My students are the first ones to attend a brand new public school in Long Island City, Queens I. Grades K and 1. They are ethnically, linguistically, and economically diverse, including English Language Learners who speak over 12 different home languages. They love to read and write and we teach literacy and math in authentic ways. Books are shared, recommended, acted out, and generally just LOVED in our school. Students also study Science, Social Studies, Spanish and engineering and they look for books across all topics and subjects.

My Project

Book sets from level A-E will help make our classroom library more functional. As a new school our libraries have some room to grow and we want as many books as possible in the hands of our young readers. More students will have their “just right” books to practice and grow as readers. Each student needs 8-10 books at their level to practice skills we learn in class. These books will help my students get more practice and become stronger readers.

In Kindergarten and early first grade, students need to read many, many pattern books.

This helps them internalize sight words and content vocabulary, setting a strong foundation for later advanced literacy skills.
