Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are just starting to develop a love for learning as they enter kindergarten. They are learning to recognize letters, numbers, and to write short words independently. Many of my students come to kindergarten without any preschool experience, making my classroom their first formal learning environment. Our school is located in a small agricultural community on the central coast of California, where many of my students come from Spanish-speaking Latinx families that work in agriculture. Though some do not have the resources to contribute financially to the classroom, my students’ families are all very supportive of their children’s learning.
My kindergarteners come to school with a palpable excitement for the day’s activities, which encourages me to be the best teacher I can be for them.
The school’s community is full of an apparent love and support for both students and teachers. My students are enthusiastic about learning, which allows me to come to class daily excited to positively contribute to their learning and understanding of the world around them.
My Project
My Kinder students come to school very excited to learn and spend time together each day. However, many are still learning how to calm their bodies and focus their minds in a classroom environment. With these fidget toys, I will be able to provide them the tools they need to wiggle and fidget at different times of the day.
Students will be able to use these toys when they are feeling anxious or stressed as an outlet for their nervous energy.
Students will also be able to use them as a sensory play experience after they have finished their assignments. Being their very first teacher, I have a special opportunity to teach them how to both feel and manage their emotions in an appropriate way at school. I think these fidget toys will be a perfect tool for that.
