Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are creative, funny, and determined. In addition, my kids are incredibly smart. I teach at low-income school in Oklahoma City, OK, and nearly all of my kids speak English as their second language. Sadly, most of my kids think that this somehow makes them less intelligent, but it really shows just how bright they truly are.
I know that my students can be just as successful as those from wealthier neighborhoods; I want them to see this for themselves.
My kids are working hard to keep up their grades, raise their ACT scores, and navigate the transition to adulthood, and most of my kids have to balance this with working a full-time job.
My Project
Staying focused in chemistry can often be extremely difficult, especially for my students with hyperactivity and sensory disorders. These supplies will help me provide flexible seating options for my students that need to fidget or keep moving in order to stay focused. Additionally, LED lighting has been connected to an increased number of headaches, anxiousness, and stomach pains.
In these trying times, I want to do everything I possibly can to ensure that my students have access to a comfortable, engaging, and safe classroom.
All of these items can be easily disinfected between class periods. Socially distanced classrooms feel strange and uncomfortable, but these items will help restore at least some level of normalcy for my students.
