When I look at my school population of students, the one thing I notice is how culturally diverse they are. I have students who come from Mexico, Africa, Asia, and Polynesian Islands. I work at a Title I school where 89% of the students qualify to receive free lunch. I love coming to work every day because I get to share my love of art, history, and mathematics with my students. In return, they are teaching me about their personal culture. Most of my students come from low-income homes where they experience many struggles daily. But do they show this? No, they show me that the world will not bring them down and that they are excited to learn something new every day when they walk into my room.
My Project
I can honestly say that I love what I do every single day. I am truly passionate about art and math. There is nothing better than when I can teach the two together in the same lesson. The Fibonacci Sequence is such an interesting math equation that is used in art frequently and also seen in nature.
The Fibonacci Sequence is a series of numbers in which each number is the sum of the two that precede it.
Starting at 0 and 1, the sequence looks like this: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, and so on forever. The Fibonacci Sequence can be described using a mathematical equation: Xn+2= Xn+1 + Xn.
The funny thing is the Finonacci Sequence is actually written going around the Northwest cafeteria wall as well.
One project I love to do with my students every semester is teach them about the Fibonacci Sequence and Color Theory. Afterward, we use our new knowledge to create an amazing Fibonacci Sequence Spiral Tie-Dye T-Shirt. I have been personally tie-dying for over 15 years and I love being able to pass down this amazing technique to our youth. Supporting this project will allow me to tie-dye with my students for the next couple of semesters. I am having to provide enough dye for 12 full classes in a school year. I appreciate your consideration in allowing me to continue this tradition.
