My students crave books! As a teacher, I have been blessed to have many avid readers throughout the years. My students need a variety of books of all levels and genres since I have a diverse population with individual interests and abilities. As far as nonfiction is concerned, we have textbooks and leveled readers to support different topics, but there is a shortage of engaging fiction in my library. They light up when I get a new book or I share a new read aloud. Their faces brighten as they come to me with great book recommendations. Reading brings us together as a class and strengthens our bond.
We have a wonderful reading program that we use in fifth grade, but my children love to have the freedom to read books of their choice during independent reading.
I want my students to get enjoyment and comfort in reading books that are "just right" for them. My classroom library needs lots of love!
My Project
These books, many are classic American reads, will indeed make an incredible difference in the lives of my students. Books impact us in so many ways and on so many levels. My students have taken the reading strategies they have learned from our reading program and have used these strategies to interact with the texts they are reading. They are becoming more mindful readers every day.
Literature allows them to escape to a different reality on a daily basis, opening up their minds to ideas that transfer to their writing and overall perspectives on a variety of topics.
I'm hoping to expose them to authors who are extremely gifted. Ultimately, I want my students to love their classroom library.
