Feed the Students so They Don't Eat the Teachers!

Help me give my students the food and snacks they need to make it through the day because feeding them hot noodles and other yummy snacks gives them energy, and soothes them emotionally.

My Students

My school is a large high school in a high needs area. I serve a large population of Hawaiian and Pacific Islander students, some of whom were born and raised in Hawaii, and some who have recently immigrated.

We have a very racially and ethnically diverse school population, so we focus on creating a sense of place.

Students have many opportunities to participate in sports and academics but not as many opportunities for artistic expression.

Our students tend to be highly creative and visually acute, even when other academic skills may be undeveloped, so our art program is a vital opportunity that meets our kids right where they are whether highly advanced or differently-abled.

My Project

Hungry kids don't learn! Angry kids don't learn! Teachers who cannot build effective relationships with their students have students who don't learn.

Help me feed them food and love so their amygdalas can calm down and brains can develop.

I spend probably $1200 a year on snacks for my students because after 11 years of teaching I have found it's a great way to break the ice. In our culture here in Hawaii, as in many cultures around the world, eating together is the ultimate bonding experience. Giving someone food is the ultimate kindness with instant soothing results.

Many students do come to school hungry for a variety of reasons, and they need the calories, or they will be useless and sad. But students also need little rewards when they work hard, and I do art competitions after every art assignment, and food is the prize! They love it, and it really improves the vibe of the class. In these troubling times when everyone is more emotionally fragile, I need this social glue and succor to soothe their savage minds and get them ready to learn.
